What is Gestalt Therapy?
Gestalt therapy is a psychotherapy that addresses the whole being and encourages full integration of the authentic self through direct contact with the body and feelings. It is a therapy that takes into account the whole individual, and or the whole organization, and is concerned with both mind and body.

Not only is it a means for promoting the healthy individual, but in recent years it has proved to be of great value in educational and organizational contexts. The goal of Gestalt is to create greater vitality and allow the individual and or organization to live more fully in the moment.

The Gestalt approach is to bring into awareness, in the moment, to the more obvious discrepancies in the person’s presentation of themselves and response to others. Here the anxiety becomes available to the individual to experience or to resist. These occurrences are a vital part of the change process.

Gestalt engages experiential learning and role paying to allow individuals to emerge into the present moment by releasing their clutch hold on past problems, self-concepts, fantasies or theories about themselves or others.

Participants learn that life takes place in the present moment, not in the past or the future, and in living in the present to take responsibility for their lives with greater joy and authenticity.

History of Gestalt
Gestalt therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by Fritz Perls together with other therapists in the 1940’s.

Perls, originally a Freudian analyst, was influenced by the principles of Gestalt psychology and existential philosophy and drew from sources in medicine and psychiatry.

Gestalt’s insights and work were an integral influence in the human potential movement of the 1960’s and continues to grow in influence today.
